The History

The Norwegian Playwrights' Association (Norske Dramatikeres Forening) was established on the 19th of December 1938. The governing charter of the organization was adopted by a vote of the general assembly on the 17th of January 1939. The first general assembly after the war, re-established the Association, this time under it's current name, Norske Dramatikeres Forbund.
Alex Brinchmann (1888-1978), author, playwright and pediatrician, played an important role in the establishment of the Union and was its first chairman of the board, serving two periods; from 1938 to 1940 and from 1945 to 1967. Brinchmann wrote, besides a stack of novels and numerous medical papers, about 20 plays for the theatre, among these, Karusellen, (The Merry-Go-Round), in which the famous line, "There are pills and there are pills, Mrs. Blom." is heard for the first time. This line has been adopted into the Norwegian language as a standard expression in which the word "pills" is replaced by a word appropriate to the occasion.
