About Silamiut

In the summer of 1984 a group of former students from Tukak Teatret established the “self-owned” Institute Silamiut Teatret. The charter members were artistic director Simon “Mooqqu” Løvstrøm, actor/technician Ilannguaq Alaufsen; actors Bendo Schmidt, Naja Rosing Olsen, Agga Olsen Dam, Anda Kristiansen, Oisunnguaq Alaufsen and Rasmus Lyberth. Silamiut has since 1985 and up until 2006 received funding from the autonomous government of Greenland. In 2006 their grant was for 999,000 Danish crowns. Beginning 2007, an agreement between the autonomous government and Silamiut will guarantee the work and the continuity of Silamiut Teatret one year at a time.  Silamiut is starting 2006 a project based theatre.

The theatre has no full time employed actors or technicians. Funding is applied for from foundations and organizations for each individual project. Silamiut’s artistic director is Svenn B Syrin and the managing director is Jørgen Chemnitz. The theatre has both a home stage and touring mandate. Aside from extensive tours in Greenland the group has played to audiences in the greater part of Europe, Canada, Alaska and Australia. The theatre has produced productions for children, advent calendars for KNR-TV, political satire on current events, theatre for adults and well as information campaigns. Th individual members hold workshops and teach acting on all levels.

Silamiut has released recordings of its music and performances on CD, video and DVD
